Snowshoeing

Many of the ski shops including Venture Sports (use coupon below for 20% rental discount) are now renting snowshoes. I see some people shoeing up the ski slopes. You are welcome to do so, for FREE but, I would recommend finding a nice trail in the woods. Many people like the trail leading up Meadow Mountain. This trail begins at the Ranger Station in Minturn just south of the Interstate at exit #171 on route 24.

For more info on back country skiing and snowshoeing visit the Ranger Station (970)827-5725 just south of the Minturn Exit #171. They have hand-outs, and maps, and they can warn you about avalanche conditions.

Interpretive snowshoe tours are offered throughout the winter, through The Vail Nature Center. A full program including Winter Discovery Tours, Backcountry, Moonlight, and Senior Tours, offer something for everyone. Learn about snowshoe history, avalanche areas, animal tracks, bird sightings, geology and weather. A reasonable fee is charged (usually around $ 20) and snowshoe rental is also available. For more information or to register call 479-2264.

Ice Climbing

While not a sport for everyone, Vail offers some of the best ice climbing available anywhere. Dr. Delicate, the Rigid Designator, Aberrant Behavior, Secret Probation, and the 180 foot pillar known as Fang, offer a wide selection of climbs, to choose from. Climbers from all over the world are attracted to Vail's high-rated climbs. Another advantage to the ice climbs in Vail is that they are so close to the road. Easy access has it's drawbacks. There is often a waiting line at the bottom of the more popular climbs. Other nearby ice climbing areas are located in Ten Mile Canyon, located just east of Copper Mountain, and in Glenwood Canyon, 25 west of Vail.

A fun, safe & challenging experience

Glenwood Caverns and Fairy Caves

Originally opened for public tours in 1886, the Fairy Caves were touted locally as the "Eighth Wonder of the World". World War I put an end to the tourist operation, and what little visitation to the caves that occurred in years since essentially came to an end several decades ago. Since the caves were closed, numerous pristine rooms and passageways have been discovered including two of the largest rooms in Colorado. After being closed to the public for 82 years, we are excited to reopen the historic cave and the newly discovered areas for your enjoyment.
